A High Price to Pay

We are going to be looking at snow from now until May.
In this post, I will show you some of the crazy prices we pay here at our local stores.

Nathaniel and I went on a mile walk to the store last week.

We walked on the trail along the slough.

The Catholic Church

The "Annex" store, a half mile walk.

All of the houses are on stilts because of flooding during the spring and summer.

A mile down the road is "Dave's" store.

Because everything has to be shipped hundreds, and even thousands of miles to get here, the local store prices are ridiculously high.  We try to buy everything we need online, in Anchorage, or with the Alaska Bush Shoppers.  The only thing we buy at our local store is milk, eggs, and chips.  It's still fun to get out and go to the store every once in a while.

Febreze candle: $14.65

Tide detergent: $18.29

Handsoap: $4.55

Welch's grape juice: $8.75

Half gallon ice cream: $8.59

Name brand cereal: $6.79

Starbucks drink: $6.05

Beef Jerky: $10.65

4 Duracell batteries: $8.85

Peanut butter: $11.59

Gallon ice cream: $18.75

Refrigerator: $1,227.99

Washing machine: $699.99

Chips: $7.25

Last week, ice started to cover the surface of the slough.  This weekend, there was over 2-inch thick ice, and we saw people crossing the slough by foot.

Walking back on the trail.

We took a detour on our way home and walked by the new school construction.  We are on schedule to move into the new school over Christmas break!  We will pack up our classrooms before we leave and they will hire a crew to move the boxes over the two weeks.

The back of the school, this is the loading dock.

The front and main entrance.

The middle/high school will be on the top floor, and the elementary will be on the first floor.

The new playground equipment has been installed into the ground.  I see a frame for a swingset!

Cooking this week, I made something inspired by what my mom used to make all the time: tuna noodle casserole.  Here I improvised and made a quick, stovetop version.

1. Make macaroni and cheese according to directions on the box. (I made 2 boxes)

2. Mix in 1 can cream of mushroom, 1 can cream of chicken, and 2 cans (drained) chunk light tuna.  You can use any variation of these ingredients.

3. Mix all together in large bowl.

4. Melt shredded cheese on top and serve.

  1. Hey Holly! Every now and again I check out your blog. Your life in Alaska is so interesting. It must be so different, and I bet difficult and amazing at the same time. My mama makes that same tuna noodle casserole but we put canned peas in ours. Its a favorite ;) Stay warm!
