The Hilton

Last week I went to Mountain Village a couple days for curriculum planning.

Cessna 207 bush plane, 6 passenger

Mountain Village, a pretty big cluster of houses.  This is also where Lower Yukon School District has their main offices.

I stayed at the "Hilton" hotel.

The "Hilton" was basically a long trailer with 15 rooms, and two dorm style bathrooms.  Mountain Village has had water problems this year, where the running water goes out for days at a time.  The water was out during my visit.  In order to flush the toilets, we took the honey bucket, scooped water from this trash can, and dumped it in the bowl so it could flush. It really wasn't that bad.

Each door had it's own key.  The end of the hotel had a kitchen where we ate all of our meals.

Walking around Mountain Village... this was 7:30 at night...

 My room at the Hilton.

My job for the visit was to work with the other Language Arts teachers from our district to choose a textbook for our curriculum.  We heard "sales pitches" from a handful of publishing companies.  After two days of reviewing and evaluating each textbook, we came to a majority decision on one for next school year.

 Flying back to Alakanuk.

It's mid-April and everything is still frozen.

We dropped off a passenger in Kotlik before going to Alakanuk.

Driving past our new school.

HOMEMADE ENVELOPES
Last week I had to get a little creative.  I was mailing out cards that were too large for the envelopes I had, and I'm not patient enough to order ones online and wait 2+ weeks for them to get here.
So I made my own envelopes!  I already had scrapbook paper, scissors, glue, and tape.

Measure the size envelope that you need.

Open up the envelope you already have.

Trace the pattern onto scrapbooking paper.

Fold in the sides, and then the bottom flap.

Put lines of glue on the bottom flap to secure the envelope.

CINNAMON SUGAR DOUGHNUTS
{Ingredients: 1 can Pillsbury Original large Biscuits, 1/2 c. sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, a deep fryer filled with oil.}

Use a can of Pillsbury Original Large Biscuits.  Flatten a little with your hand.

Drop into deep fryer.

Flip them when they get brown on one side.  (about 1-3 minutes, just watch them)

Mix 1/2 c. sugar and 1 tsp. cinnamon in a bowl that has a lid (or tupperware bowl)
Take doughnuts straight from the fryer and put them into the mix.
Put the lid on the bowl and shake until they are fully coated.

Enjoy your homemade hot doughnuts!
