Native Youth Olympics

This week I gave a try at homemade sushi.  I heard the store had "nori" which is just sheets of seaweed.  I did the best I could with the ingredients I had...

1. Take one sheet of seaweed out of package.

 2. After cooking white rice, spread over seaweed.

3. After baking salmon with sea salt, lay pieces in a row.

4. Roll up half way and add another row of salmon.

5. Pack white rice around the roll.

6. Seal sushi roll in saran rap.

7. Let chill in refrigerator.

8. Cut up into slices.

This week our school hosted the Native Youth Olympics for elementary and junior high students.  The Native Youth Olympics tests the students' academic and athletic abilities, all embracing their native culture.

Opening ceremonies: each team parading out with their school's banner.

Wrist carry: the athlete holds their body off the ground using their wrist on a stick.

Stick pull: two opponents sit with feet together and pull at the stick until one lets go.  The winner is the one who is still holding the stick.

Kneel jump: sit on knees and jump out on your feet as far as you can.

On Friday, while NYO was going on in the gym, the high school students joined up with an elementary class.

This week was crazy, but now we are looking forward to seeing our friends and family soon for Christmas!
